In days gone by hay was grown and stacked by horse and man power. Hay was cut with cut with a horse drawn mower and then raked with a buck rack. Hay was loaded on to wagons or slip by men and pitchforks. The hay was brought to the stackyard and then put up on the stack with a hay derrick. It was then moved around with pitchforks to level the stack. When it came time to feed the hay, a large knife, called a hay knife was used to cut thru the stack and make it easier to throw the hay off the stack. It was all done with man or horse power. The tall fence around the stackyard was to keep deer out of the hay.
