Some one was interested in the area enough to stake a mining claim. This is a claim post....probably one of the corners of a mining claim. Person staking claim would have put their location papers in the location monument. Suspect this claims was stake a few years ago.

There is a shovel with broken handle in the pile of rock around the claim monument. I have staked a few claims in my life. A standard lode claim is 600 feet by 1500 feet containing a little over 20 acres. Claim post are put on the 4 corners of the claim and a location monument put at the point of discovery on claim. In the location monument the locator would put a copy of his location papers. I have found location papers on old claims that went back more than 50 years. Usually papers were put in an old tobacco can or other container to protect them from the weather. Can is then placed among the rocks piled around the claim post
